Sheila Handley plays the bassoon in the Band. Like many of us, Sheila only started playing this instrument as an adult and now enjoys playing in a number of ensembles.
“I started playing the bassoon about 13 years ago, and joined the Band shortly afterwards. I also play the piano, guitar and recorder, and I like to sing. But my favourite instrument has to be the bassoon because I can play with so many different kinds of group – as well as the Band I play in an orchestra, a wind quintet [that was formed by members of the Band – Editor’s note] and a U3A ensemble. The only drawback is that I can’t sing at the same time (a blessing some might say!).
“Intially I could play almost 1 note in every bar! But everyone was very welcoming and there were real characters as well as great musicians. I remember the amazing feeling sitting in the middle of this BIG sound. Just like a big choir but louder. We have a lot of fun as a group, and I love the sense of achievement when we ‘get it right’, the playing out at fetes when people sit and enjoy the music.
“My all time favourite piece that I have played with the Band has to be ‘Schindler’s List’ because there is the most gorgeous counter melody on the bassoon.
“I am a retired teacher of French, Maths, RE and dyslexia support. It’s the best job in the world if the governments would just let teachers get on with it! Since I retired from teaching a few years ago I spend my time umpiring hockey, sailing, motorhoming in Europe, and learning languages as well as cooking a Community Lunch every Tuesday at The Buckingham Parish Church.
“I would just like to say that I started playing the bassoon at the age of 50, whilst my husband started the saxophone at 70. It’s never too late to start an instrument and have fun!”
