Jane Hubble was a founding member of Winslow Concert Band. Now our lead flautist, she doubles on piccolo and can also be found waving the baton as our Assistant Musical Director. In 2019 Jane was voted Bandperson of the Year by her fellow band members, recognising her strong commitment and work with the Band.
“After playing the flute for a couple of years at primary school, I started learning the flute when I was around 7 or 8 and played throughout my school years. As the flute’s baby sister, the piccolo was a natural progression and I enjoy playing that equally – each has its good and less good attributes. I also have a clarinet and oboe as well as a keyboard at home, but I can’t really say I play any of them! Maybe when I retire I’ll have time to learn them properly…
“I was a founder member of the Winslow Concert Band. There was an advertisement in the local paper about Peter Moore trying to start up a wind orchestra at Winslow. I managed to get to the band inception meeting in 1994 and then was at the first rehearsal. I’ve been here ever since…
“I think what I enjoy best about being a member of the Band is playing music with other people and the friendliness of everyone. Having been in the Band so long it is difficult to choose a favourite piece, but top of my list would be Caliph of Bagdad by Boieldieu [a piece that we will be playing at our 25th Birthday Party on 21st July 2019 – Editor’s note], the Poet & Peasant Overture by Franz von Suppe and Queen of the Night from Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute.”
Jane’s “proper job” is as Laboratory Manager at Cranfield University. Besides music her hobbies include bobbin lacemaking.
