Colin Poyntz joined the Band around 5 years ago. Playing percussion and drums he has proved he can “give it some welly”!
” I love the drums (doesn’t everybody?!). I’ve been hitting things that make a sound since before I can remember! I started having drum lessons when I was 14 and, as a teenager, I played in youth orchestras and rock bands. I also play Piano and guitar, but don’t ask me to play those instruments in front of anyone!
“I have been in the Band for about 5 years. I was new to Winslow and saw in the Parish news that there was a local concert band. Having got to know a couple of the members through church I nervously went along one night. I was immediately made to feel very welcome. I quickly realised how rusty my sight reading was as I kept losing my place in the music. But I also began to remember how exhilarating it is to play with a large group of talented musicians. That second experience is the one that brought me back week after week.
“I’ve played mostly rock and pop on the drums in the past, plus classical percussion. Winslow Concert Band has expanded my playing to include jazz, big band, military marches and showtunes. I’m now a much more versatile drummer than I was before and I understand rhythm better. I love the fact that I’m constantly learning.
“My all time favourite piece of music that we play in the Band is a toss up between ‘Little Brown Jug’ or ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’ because both of them have drum solos where I can play anything I like!
“For the ‘day job’ I’m the Pastor of Winslow Christian Fellowship. I like reading science fiction novels and making pizza and also enjoy writing and recording songs. You can even find my stuff on Spotify if you’re feeling adventurous!”
