As members of the Winslow Concert Band, we’re accustomed to creating harmonious melodies that resonate with audiences near and far. But our recent trip to Cours in the Rhone Department of France, courtesy of the Winslow Anglo French Twinning Association (WAFTA), offered us an unforgettable opportunity to blend our music with the rich cultural tapestry of a charming French town.
From May 8th to May 12th, seven of us embarked on a musical pilgrimage to Cours in the Rhone Department (next to the stunning Beaujolais region), where we were warmly embraced by the local community. Staying with local families who made us feel very much at home, we quickly found ourselves immersed in the authentic rhythms of French life, sharing stories, laughter, and of course, our mutual love for music.
The highlight of our trip was performing firstly as a nonet (including two former members) at the Gala Dinner and subsequently, in collaboration with the Harmonie des Jeunes, a local musical ensemble, at a picnic held at the picturesque Chateau de la Fargette. At the Gala Dinner we entertained the host families and our fellow Brits with a variety of tunes, including two pieces arranged specially for us by member Jo Goody. Rehearsing and playing alongside Harmonie des Jeunes at the Chateau was particularly special – was a memorable experience that showcased the universal language of music.
Beyond the musical festivities, our trip encompassed moments of exploration and discovery. A visit to the magnificent Parc des Oiseaux allowed us to marvel at nature’s symphony while basking in the glorious sunshine that graced our entire stay.
