Welcome to
Winslow Concert Band

If you walk past Winslow Public Hall on a Thursday evening, it’s hard to miss Winslow Concert Band. 30-40 people enthusiastically rehearsing anything from Strauss to Michael Jackson is certainly a memorable sound! In between the music you’ll hear laughter, chatter and the clink of teaspoons: the teabreak is a vital part of rehearsals.

The Winslow Concert Band is a true community band, welcoming musicians of all standards. It is made up of a very friendly group of players, and less experienced musicians get plenty of encouragement from more experienced members and from musical director Paul How. Members agree that their playing, especially their sight-reading, has improved since they joined, and the overall standard of the Band continues to progress.

The Band includes people with a variety of ‘day jobs’ of all ages and a wide range of playing abilities:

Rory Butcher, 13, is the youngest member, and has been playing the trombone for 5 years. He says the best thing about being in the band is the wide variety of musical styles he gets to play.

Alec Bone is one of the more senior players and is a founding member of the Band which was established in 1994. As well as playing alto sax, he says he enjoys seeing newer members gaining confidence.

Fran West, a Winslow resident, is one of the less experienced players, having started the French horn as a complete beginner just under 2 years ago. She says that playing in the band has really helped her improve.

Isobel Richards, also from Winslow, finds that playing the bassoon on a Thursday night is a good way to relax after a long day at work.

The Winslow Concert Band plays at many different events through the year, including community events such as summer fetes, Christmas carols in shopping centres, and the MAD festival at Waddesdon. Further details will be posted on the news page.

The Band is always keen to hear from players of woodwind, brass or percussion instruments. We are particularly keen to recruit a Tuba player at the moment following David Mealing's move to the South West - we have a tuba available so the skill to play it is all that is required! To enquire about joining or if you would like the Band to play at your event, call Alison on 01525 758178 or send her an email.
